What Rugby position should I play?

April 25th, 2010 · 22 Comments · Rowing Machine How To

I’m 5’10" (nearly 6′ in cleats), weigh 195 pounds, 19 years old and ive got broad shoulders and a sturdy build. I’ve got large legs and they’re pretty strong. I’ve played Rugby a bit and I’ve found I’m a good charger down the field, can handle the ball well and I know I could hurt somebody with a tackle. I’ve thought about playing Fullback but the Front Rowers positions intrigue me…Any advice?

I think you might play well as a back row forward. So either one of the two flanker positions or number eight. The keys to the these positions is running around a lot, making big tackles and carrying the ball into contact when required.

Full back – you won’t see much of the ball!

As for the front row….It is a hell of a place to play. It is a dark place when the scrum goes down. As someone new to the sport I would avoid the front row for a while. There a quite a lot of specialist skills required (and in most cases a severe lack of a sense of pain).

Play a few games as a flanker – quite often a flanker can be easily converted to a front row forward (particularly hooker) as the skills and the game requirements are similar. But if you watch and don’t like the look of it, then stay away from the front row.

As not even 6 feet you will possibly to small to play in the 2nd row (although that might depend on the size of the rest of your team!).

    I’m assuming you’re American here…

Don’t play Rugby. It’s a sissy sport and it’ll mess up your mind. You’ll probably also become an alcoholoic (Those Rugby boys are good drinkers, I’ll give ‘em that).

Just play football, at Running Back.

If you must play Rugby though, have you tried playing hooker? I played hooker when I was at school, and I’m the same size as you.

you seem like a classic second row or lock. you probably shouldn’t go with front row although i havn’t actually seen you in the flesh. You could try it and see if you are comftable.

it all depends on the code of rugby

in league your size and build sounds like you could make a good centre or maybe a back row forward

if you like big hits and running with the ball i would advise you to find a league team to be honest

    Bench Warmer

You sound like a prime example of a second row to me.

perfect second row mate. whos that fag saying rugby is shit

    Front Row Forward.

To be honest, I’m a Flanker, and I’m 6ft at 15. At your age, flankers and second rows will be ALOT bigger.

Your large legs will help tremendously in scrums and lifting in lineouts.

Mobile props/hookers are hard to come by, so if you settle in that position, you will be sought after.

However, you may be more suited to scrum half – as you don’t really have the weight. E.g on my team, our props are 18st and 15st.

But you should start playing anyway – a Coach will be able to nurture you into a position.

    Good Luck.

    scrum half

Definately No.8.Look at all the No.8′s they fit your description perfectly,Sioni Lauaki,Jerry Collins,George Smith. They need Strength to push off defenders and Tackle.tackle, tackle! either that or Lock(second row).

    You are a midget.

    Too small to play lock!

There is absolutely nothing, complex about playing in the front row. Fullback, is a very difficult position to play – need to have a good understanding of the whole game, be able to kick better than average, and think fast, often under pressure.

Depending what level you want to play you should look at flanker, preferably open side, ( look to David Wallace, Neil Back) but you will need speed and a lot endurance as this position covers more ground than any other on the field. If you don’t have great speed consider hooker but you will need to get to about 210, 220, and still retain speed and endurance, (Keith Woods). If you can kick the ball your best bet to play at a decent level will be inside, outside center (Brian O’Driscoll)

you’re my height, so, front row is a possibility. you’re a little light for a prop (but then again, so am i compared to schools around me, and i weigh 240). hooker would probably be a good position for you. short, athletic, and have a desire to go downfield and kill people. try out hooker and see how that works.

  • knowledge is the key

no way a lock, You would suit 6,7,8 or 12( if u want to play in the backs)

  • Optimus Prime

I don’t think you are suitable for Full back. you must be very fast and able to change direction as fast as possible. Front or 2nd row should be perfect for you. I’ve also seen 8th men with your physique play very well.
And to the 1st guy above: Yeah, we are all drunk and brute. In fact, we are so drunk that we’ve done your mom countless times while you were 3 hours watching commercials peppered with football.

  • mhsbaseball21

Im the same size that you are and im 18, Ive played for three years at flanker

  • BienTien

You could be the David Beckham of rugby.

  • GOD

Good position is hooker prop maybe flanker

  • Matty D

You are too small to be in the front row. Number eight could be a good position if you can run and pass well. You’re around the same size as Zinzan Brooke, the greatest number eight to have played the game so copying his playing style might be a good idea as well.

  • SAMoh1

Just to be different, I would suggest Centre. You need good crashing skills, good tackling skills, mobility and ability to see plays and shut them down. Great position as you will always be in the middle of it instead of at the bottom of a ruck eating mud. Centre is where the action is

Second row would be ideal, but you could also play no 8 – our no 8 is 6’2 (women’s!!) and is incredible! It gives you a chance to break quickly, get hold of the ball and take it into contact. I wouldn’t suggest front row, you are a bit too tall to be ideal.

  • rugbycolumn

    Lock is certainly out.
6’4 is considered the minimum height for a lock today.
I’m not sure your big enough for number 8.
Fullback is more quickness than power.
Front rowers are insane, (you never mentioned being crazy, so I’ll assume that’s out too).
Judging by your description, you sound like a flanker (also called loose forwards).
Big but not necessarily tall, powerful and dangerous.
Some notable flankers of today are Jerry Collins, Phil Waugh and Schalk Burger.
